Early life declared defenseless by D66’s initiative memorandum

19 september 2025

On September 8th, the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs discussed an initiative memorandum from D66.

In this memorandum, the minister is urged to work towards better access to abortion abroad. The title of the note reads: “Access to abortion is a human right.” The NPV opposes this call.

The NPV is concerned about this initiative. First and foremost because of the contradiction in the desire to make the killing of another human being a human right. Life begins at conception, and science is clear on this. Therefore, early life cannot be made defenceless simply because of its dependency.

There is also much to say about the substantiation D66 provides in its memorandum. It cites figures that do not align with reality. The assumption that a ban on abortion would increase female mortality is also not supported by the available literature. These and other points are elaborated in our letter addressed to all members of the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs.
